Optimal protection comes in three layers
Protective clothing is a team effort, and every garment has a job to do.
Three layers, three functions
Layering is a well-established principle in outdoor dressing. Building up multiple layers gives you the flexibility to adapt as temperatures shift and activity levels change. Each layer serves a distinct function: wicking moisture away from the body, retaining warmth, or shielding against the elements.
- Base: The base layer, or underwear, is what you wear closest to your skin. It should fit close to the body, keep you warm, and wick away moisture.
- Mid layer: The mid layer is what you wear between your base layer and your outer shell. It needs to insulate and manage moisture effectively. A mid layer should have a looser fit than the base layer to allow for good air circulation.
- Outer layer: The outer layer should also keep wind and weather out, with sufficient ventilation and water-repellent properties to let moisture escape outward, not inward.
The three-layer principle applies equally to workwear and protective clothing, but with one additional and especially critical dimension: protection. Devold Protection develops wool base and mid layers with documented, certified protection against cold, heat, flame, arc flash, and electrostatic hazards.
Safe long johns from Devold Protection are a flame-resistant, lightweight wool base layer made with a high proportion of merino wool. The Safe series wicks moisture away very effectively, keeping the body dry. Synthetic fabrics do not have these properties, and in a workplace accident involving high heat, you risk serious burns to the skin or fibres melting and causing severe skin damage.
Devold Spacer is a lightweight mid-layer with wool on both the inner and outer surfaces. The Spacer yarn creates distance between the layers, providing good airflow and increased insulation. Devold Spacer is heat-resistant, flame-retardant and offers antistatic protection.
Designed to work together
Our tests show a significant increase in total protection when Devold wool base layers and mid layers are worn together. Devold protective clothing is built for layering, yet remains comfortable, flexible, and soft against the skin.
Protective clothing is a bit like insurance. You only discover how much you need it when something goes wrong. Until then, you want to notice it as little as possible.
Devold Protection gives you the market's most advanced layered total protection, in gear you'll genuinely enjoy wearing. See our range of protective clothing at devoldprotection.com.
